The Damien Center empowers communities and persons affected by HIV/AIDS in the state of Indiana by being a leading resource, provider, and advocate for comprehensive HIV/AIDS care, prevention, education, and related services. Damien Center, Damien Cares and Damien Pharmacy provide client-centered social services focused on care coordination, clinical and pharmacy services, mental health, housing, and nutrition to the Indianapolis community. 

The full-time Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Therapist will be responsible for the provision of direct service to clients engaged in the IOP Program at Damien Center and will be part of the team providing services through the CARE Program (Comprehensive Access to Recovery and Empowerment). This position will provide direct clinical services to adults diagnosed with substance use disorder engaged in IOP and CARE program facilitating IOP groups, individual therapy for IOP clients, and completing initial assessments.  


Essential Job Functions   

  • Group Therapy:  

    • Provide group therapy for cohorts of up to 12 individuals in an Intensive Outpatient Program, focusing on the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues. 
  • Assessment and Treatment Planning: 

    • Conduct biopsychosocial assessments; recommend clients to appropriate treatment using ASAM criteria. 
    • Develop comprehensive, individualized service/treatment plans for assigned clients, revising as necessary; complete discharge planning for clients. 

  • Culturally Competent Interventions: 

    • Apply culturally competent therapeutic interventions in delivering services to individuals and groups for treating substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. 
  • Collaboration and Treatment Team Participation: 

    • Participate in multi-disciplinary treatment planning conferences; present appropriate patient information to the treatment team; recommend effective treatment interventions. 
  • Referrals and Progress Documentation: 

    • Make recommendations for alternative treatment programs; complete referrals as indicated. 
    • Ensure timely completion of progress notes and treatment updates in the medical record; maintain all clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards. 

  • Implementation of IOP Programming: 

    • Assist in the implementation of IOP programming; provide direct services in both group and individual therapy settings. 
    • Telehealth may be utilized to meet specific client needs. 


Essential Skills and Experience to be Successful   

  • Master's degree in mental health field required. 

  • Active Clinical license (LCSW, LMFT, LMHC, LCAC) or license eligible required. 

  • Minimum of one year experience working with people with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. 

  • Experience working in an Intensive Outpatient Program and thorough understanding of Peer Recovery preferred. 

  • Knowledge of LGBTQ+ culture and societal/family challenges is required. 

  • Participate in continuing education requirements per year (Minimum of 20 CEs per year), continue to enhance and develop knowledge in area(s) of expertise and/or interest, and build on use of modalities to meet clients' needs; attend ongoing professional staff development programs, workshops, and presentations.
